摘要: A hydromechanical fuel pump system of supplying timing fluid and fuel to high pressure fuel injectors utilizing a hydromechanical fuel control circuit to control the flow of fuel that is withdrawn from a fuel reservoir by a pump and delivered to the fuel injectors which includes a speed signal generator that produces a fuel pressure in a speed signal branch line of the fuel control circuit that is a function of engine rpm, and a torque shaping module that is provided in a fuel delivery branch of the fuel control circuit. The torque shaping module controls the supply pressure of the fuel flow to the injectors so that, during an initial engine operating range, the supply pressure is merely that as received from the fuel pump, in a second engine operating range, the torque shaping module causes the supply pressure to be a function of fuel pressure in the speed signal branch line as boosted by an assist means, the effect of which is removed in a third engine operating range, and in a last engine operating range, the supply pressure is determined by partially offsetting the effect of the pressure in the speed signal branch line by a counterpressure factor.

摘要: A unit fuel injector assembly (2, 88) is disclosed for periodically injecting fuel of a variable quantity on a cycle to cycle basis as a function of the pressure of fuel supplied to the injector from a source of fuel (48) and at a variable time during each cycle as a function of the pressure of a timing fluid supplied to the injector from a source of timing fluid (54). A reciprocating plunger assembly (24,146) is received within the injector body (10, 106) and includes an upper plunger section (26, 148), a lower plunger section (28,150) and an intermediate plunger section (30,152) in order to define a variable volume timing chamber (32,138), a variable volume injection chamber (34,162) and a variable volume compensation chamber (36,176). Biasing means (38) including upper compression spring (40,180) and lower compression spring (42, 182) are arranged in the compensation chamber (36,176) to independently bias the lower plunger section (28,150) and the intermediate plunger section (30,152) in opposite directions to tend to collapse the timing chamber (32,138) and injection chamber (34,162). A plurality of passages (58,158,188,194) are provided to cause both the timing chambers (32,138) and the injection chamber (162) to be spilled near the end of each injection event to produce a sharper end of injection and compensation for wear in the cam-operated, actuating mechanism (4).

The invention is characterized by an injector body (4) having a minimum number of internal flow passages (66, 72) designed to reduce the complexity and cost of manufacture of the injector and having an exterior shape designed to form a fuel supply flow path (22) and an isolated fuel drain flow path (24) between the exterior surface of the injector body (4) and the interior surface of the recess (6) in which the injector (2) is designed to be received.

摘要: An internal combustion engine is provided including an injector having an injector body including a nozzle assembly having an annular outer surface. A cylinder head includes an injector mounting bore to receive the injector, and a lower sealing portion. The engine also includes an engine coolant passage formed in the cylinder head to receive engine coolant to remove heat from the cylinder head. The engine coolant passage opens into, and is fluidly connected to, the mounting bore to cause coolant in the coolant passage to contact the annular outer surface of the nozzle assembly. A lower seal is positioned between the lower sealing portion and the nozzle assembly to form a fluid seal.

摘要: This disclosure provides system and method that can determine hydraulic start of injection (SOI) in engines using an in-cylinder pressure sensor. The system and method determine apparent heat release rate (AHRR) curve data for the cylinder from the pressure information provided by the in-cylinder pressure sensors, and the hydraulic SOI from the derivative of the AHRR curve data. The system and method provide diagnostic, control and/or compensation opportunities for fuel injector operation in high pressure fuel rail engine systems without use of expensive or complex fuel injector components.

摘要: A fuel injector having a nozzle with improved cooling including a retainer and a nozzle housing received therein. The nozzle housing includes a nozzle shank, an outer peripheral surface and at least one injection hole at a tip of the nozzle shank. The nozzle shank is positioned in a nozzle support portion of the retainer. In one embodiment, the outer peripheral surface of the nozzle shank is tapered, and the inner peripheral surface of the nozzle support portion is correspondingly tapered and sized to engage the outer peripheral surface of the nozzle shank along a tapered interface. In another embodiment, the inner peripheral surface of the nozzle support portion has a diameter smaller than a diameter of the outer peripheral surface of the nozzle shank so that an interference fit exists at a seal interface. In yet another embodiment, a nozzle seal seals an interface between the inner peripheral surface of the retainer and the outer peripheral surface of the nozzle shank to thereby prevent entry of hot gases into the interface. In another embodiment, the nozzle support portion is provided on a nozzle sleeve.

摘要: An improved fuel injector is provided which effectively controls fuel injection events using two injection control valves which operate in series to control the movement of a nozzle valve element. An outer injection control valve and actuator assembly operates to control fluid pressure in a control volume adjacent an inner injection control valve thereby controlling the movement of the inner control valve which, in turn, controls fuel pressure in an inner control volume adjacent one end of the nozzle valve element. A particular design of the inner injection control valve prevents control valve oscillations thereby minimizing unwanted fuel injection variations.

摘要: A multi-mode internal combustion engine and method of operating the engine is provided which is capable of operating in a variety of modes based on engine operating conditions to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The multi-mode engine include a fuel delivery system and control system for permitting the engine to operate in a diesel mode, a homogeneous charge dual fuel transition mode, a spark ignition or liquid spark ignition mode and/or a premixed charge compression ignition mode. The control system and method permits the engine operation to transfer between the various modes in an effective and efficient manner by controlling one or more fuel delivery devices or other engine components so as to move along a continuous transfer path while maintaining engine torque at a substantially constant level.

摘要: A unitized fuel supply assembly is disclosed including an in-line reciprocating cam driven pump (14) for supplying fuel to an accumulator (12) from which fuel is directed to a plurality of engine cylinders by means of a distributor (16) mounted on the unitized assembly. Dual pump control valves (20) provide fail safe electronic control over the effective pump displacement. One or more injection control valves mounted on the distributor are provided to control injection timing and quantity. The accumulator (12) contains a labyrinth of interconnected chambers (36) which are shaped and positioned to produce a minimum overall package size while providing for easy manufacture.

摘要: In accordance with preferred embodiments of the invention a timing adjustment device includes a cam follower that is engaged between an overhead cam and an injector rocker arm, and is mounted on a rotatable eccentric shaft. The geometry of the eccentric shaft and cam follower is designed so that, as timing is varied by rotation of the eccentric shaft, no change is produced in the vertical height of the rocker arm when the cam shaft is on the outer base circle and the injector is bottomed, in order to assure that the "mechanical crush" of the PT type injector is constant despite changes in timing. In a first application of the timing arrangement, it is used together with a simple injector, which does not utilize a multi-plunger arrangement to form a hydraulic link, to achieve lower parasitic losses. To obtain independent control over injection pressure and timing, a fuel injector in which a hydraulic link is formed between plungers of a multi-plunger arrangement is used with the timing arrangement in order to allow the injection pressure to be maintained constant over a wide range of engine speeds without interfering with engine timing.
