Abstract: Disclosed is a method of processing a specimen in which a target component in a specimen is processed using a specimen processing chip provided with a flow-path, the method including: introducing a fluid into a flow-path to form an interface that divides the fluid from a process liquid used for the processing of the target component with a rim of the interface on an inner wall of the flow-path, the process liquid containing particles including the target component; and moving the formed interface along the flow-path with the rim of the interface on the inner wall so as to force out the particles retained in the process liquid by the fluid.

Abstract: A method of depleting the bacterial content in a water source is provided. The method involves depleting the bacterial content in a water source for a water flooding process, said method comprising contacting a water source with a superparamagnetic or paramagnetic nanoparticle; complexing the bacteria with the particle; and removing the bacteria-particle complex by applying a magnetic field so as to provide a water source with depleted bacterial content. The depleted water can then be pumped into one or more connecting injection well(s) in an oil field pushing the crude oil towards one or more production well(s) thereby allowing for enhanced oil recovery from the production wells.

Abstract: Particulate solid composite material for purifying nucleic acids containing magnetic nanoparticles embedded in a carrier matrix based on at least one polymer that is obtained by polyaddition of a) at least one isocyanate-reactive monomer A, selected from compounds containing at least two functional groups, each having at least one Zerewitinoff-reactive hydrogen atom, and in addition to these at least two functional groups, carry at least one anionic or potentially anionic residue, preferably selected from the group consisting of carboxylate, sulfonate or combinations thereof, with b) at least one polyisocyanate monomer B with the provisio that said polyaddition occurs in the presence of magnetic nanoparticles, is particularly suitable as carrier material for purification of nucleic acids. Said composite material is easy to prepare, is stable, and magnetic and has outstanding application properties in the bind-wash-elute purification of nucleic acids using magnetic separation.

Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting and sequestering target analytes in a fluid sample. The system comprises a bulk specimen reservoir for receiving a liquid sample, along with paramagnetic materials operative to selectively bind to the target analyte of interest. A vertex is interconnected with the bulk specimen reservoir to define a specimen chamber assembly to which a magnetic chamber is deployed about the vertex portion thereof and operative to sequester the magnetic particles, as well as any analyte of interest bound thereto, within the interior of the vertex. Once sufficient time is allowed for mixing and allowing the magnetic capsule to sufficiently retain the magnetic particles within the vertex, the vertex is disconnected from the specimen reservoir and the paramagnetic materials retained therein analyzed to determine the presence of the analyte of interest.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus are provided for automated isolation of selected analytes, to which magnetically-responsive solid supports are bound, from other components of a sample. An apparatus for performing an automated magnetic separation procedure includes a mechanism for effecting linear movement of a magnet between operative and non-operative positions with respect to a receptacle device. A receptacle holding station within which a receptacle device may be temporarily stored prior to moving the receptacle to the apparatus for performing magnetic separation includes magnets for applying a magnetic field to the receptacle device held therein, thereby drawing at least a portion of the magnetically-responsive solid supports out of suspension before the receptacle device is moved to the magnetic separation station. An automated receptacle transport mechanism moves the receptacle devices between the apparatus for performing magnetic separation and the receptacle holding station.

Abstract: A high capacity magnetic filter for separating magnetic and non-magnetic contaminants from contaminated liquid streams includes a housing having (i) an interior region between the inlet and outlet for a process stream, (ii) a plurality of vertically oriented, elongated non-magnetic holder sleeves positioned within the interior region (iii) paramagnetic metal packing material that is randomly distributed in the interior region to form a packed compartment that has a void volume which is above 95 percent, and (iv) a device to generate a magnetic field within the interior region. Generation of a uniform magnetic field within the packed compartment magnetizes the holder sleeves and matrix of packing materials. The holder sleeves and matrix create a large surface area for collecting the contaminants.
