A method for obtaining high accuracy mass spectra using an ion trap mass analyzer includes adjusting operating parameters of the analyser to enable a reverse mass scan in a mass selective resonance ejection mode and setting the trapping field to trap ions in a mass-to-charge ratio which has a lower limit close to the mass-to-charge ratio of an ion of interest. A method of determining chemical shift includes adjusting operating parameters of the analyzer to enable forward and reverse mass scans and calibrating the spectra obtained from the forward and reverse mass scans.

The present invention relates to a device for preparing assay samples using a number of microscope slides. Each slide has a number of assay reaction surface locations spaced on the planar surface of the slide. In preferred embodiments, the device comprises, in part, a microscope slide holder that has the exterior dimensions of a SBS standard microplate, such as a 96 well plate. The device accepts conventional microscope slides equipped with sixteen microarray surfaces spaced nine millimeters apart on center, or four for a 96 well plate. Individual chamber plates are placed on top of the slides, creating an individual well above each assay reaction surface location. In preferred embodiments, each assay reaction surface location can comprise a microarray of multiple reactive sites. Thus, parallel processing can be done of samples for genomic or proteomic profiling. An advantage of the present invention is that one can use the conventional high throughput assaying equipment for SBS standard microplates while using conventional microscope slides, thereby allowing the use of robotic assay reading equipment designed for slides.

A protective cosmetic particulate gel delivery system for a topically applied active agent employs an agar gel and a restraining polymer to retain the actve agent in the gel. The particles have an average particle diameter of at least 0.05 mm while the restraining polymer has a molecular weight of at least 50,000 daltons and has retention groups to bind the active agent. The restraining polymers can be selected from the group consisting of polyquaternium 24, laurdimonium hydroxyethylcellulose, cocodimonium hydroxyethylcellulose, steardimonium hydroxyethylcellulose, quaternary ammonium substituted water-soluble polysaccharides, alleyl quaternary celluloses and polypeptides having or provided with retention groups to retain the active agent. The gel particles of the invention are manually crushable on the skin to increase the surface area of the gel particle material and expose the restraining polymer to the skin or other body surface for release of the active agent. The delivery system can be incorporated in multiphase cosmetic formulations such as gels, creams and lotions.

By adapting femtosecond micromachining approaches developed in hydrogels, we can perform Intra-tissue Refractive Index Shaping (IRIS) in biological tissues. We reduced femtosecond laser pulse energies below the optical breakdown thresholds to create grating patterns that are associated with a change in the refractive index of the tissue. To increase two-photon absorption, we used a two (or more)-photon-absorbing chromophore.

A tandem mass spectrometer is provided in the present invention. The mass spectrometer includes an ion source, a quadrupole mass filter located at downstream side of the ion source, a linear ion trap disposed at downstream side of the mass filter and an ion detector placed on the side of the ion trap, all of which are placed in a vacuum environment. The instrument can obtain MS meeting the standard spectral library search criteria by the quadrupole mass filter cooperating with linear ion trap, realize any multi-stage MS under two modes of axial collision and resonance excitation, and predict and optimize the inflow amount and types of samples under the ion trap analysis mode by the quadrupole. A tandem MS analysis method is also provided, which can repeatedly provide precursor ion selection, ion acceleration, achieve high-energy collision dissociation, low product ion mass discrimination effect.

A method, apparatus, media and signals for generating a computer representation of a three-dimensional swept envelope of a vehicle having a wheeled chassis operable to support a vehicle body for movement along a terrain is disclosed. The method involves receiving terrain data representing a 3D terrain, receiving data defining parameters of the vehicle, and receiving data defining a path for movement of the vehicle from an initial position on the terrain to a displaced position on the terrain. The method also involves disposing a computer representation of the vehicle on the 3D representation of the terrain at successive locations along the path using the parameters. Disposing involves determining points of engagement between wheels of the wheeled chassis and the 3D representation of the terrain to dispose the chassis with respect to the terrain, and determining a corresponding 3D location of the vehicle body with respect to the terrain. The method further involves generating a plurality of spatial extents of the vehicle at the successive locations, the spatial extents defining the 3D swept envelope of the vehicle when moving between the initial position and the displaced position. In another aspect a method for generating a computer representation of a three-dimensional swept envelope of an object moving along a guideway disposed with respect to a 3D representation of a terrain is disclosed.
