A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) catalytic converter for at least the conversion of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, removal of a fraction of particulate matter, and decrease of sulfur trioxide emissions within exhaust gases from an engine and consequently of sulfuric acid, is disclosed. The DOC may include any suitable configuration including at least a substrate and a washcoat, where the substrate has a plurality of channels, suitable porosity, offers a three-dimensional support for the washcoat, and is made of any suitable material. The washcoat may be deposited on the substrate by any suitable method, and may include a mixture of at least one or more carrier material oxides and one or more catalysts. Suitable materials for the carrier material oxides may include titanium dioxide, tin dioxide, and zirconium dioxide, among others, excluding aluminum oxide (Al2O3), which may serve for a decrease of sulfur trioxide emissions and consequently of sulfuric acid mist. Suitable catalysts within the washcoat may include platinum, palladium, rhodium, and iridium, among others.

A method for producing alkali and alkaline earth alloys. It also relates to the use of the alkali and alkaline earth compositions. In order to create a novel method for producing alkali and alkaline earth alloys, it is proposed within the context of the invention that salts, hydroxides, alkoxides or oxides of alkali or alkaline earth compounds be mixed with salts, hydroxides, alkoxides or oxides of semi-metals, nonmetals or metals and then heated to at least 100° C., the salts, hydroxides, alkoxides or oxides of alkali or alkaline earth metals being present in a molar ratio of 1:1 or in excess thereof in relation to the salts, hydroxide, alkoxides or oxides of the semi-metals, nonmetals or metal. Surprisingly, it was found within the context of the invention that by mixing salts, hydroxides, alkoxides or oxides of alkali or alkaline earth compounds with salts, hydroxides, alkoxides or oxides of semi-metals or metals from the 3rd or 4th main group and subsequent heating, alkali or alkaline earth alloys can be produced.

Articles comprising a catalyst film comprising VOx, MoO3 or WO3, and TiO2 deposited on a substrate are disclosed. The articles are useful for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx in exhaust gases. Methods for producing such articles deposit a catalyst film on the substrate to form a coated substrate, which is then calcined. When used in an SCR process, the coated articles have enhanced activity for NOx conversion, reduced activity for SOx conversion, or both. Light-weight, coated articles having high catalyst loads can be fabricated at the same or reduced dimensions when compared with laminated articles, and increased kNOx/kSOx ratios are available even from coated articles having relatively thin catalyst films. The articles should have particular value for power plant operations, where coal and high-sulfur fuels are commonly used and controlling sulfur trioxide generation is critical.

An object of the present invention is to increase the NOx purification rate of an unactivated SCR catalyst in an exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine that has an oxidation catalyst and the SCR catalyst disposed downstream of the oxidation catalyst. In order to achieve this object, the present invention provides an exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine, including an oxidation catalyst disposed in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine, an SCR catalyst that is disposed downstream of the oxidation catalyst in the exhaust passage, and a supply device for supplying unburnt fuel to the oxidation catalyst when the SCR catalyst is not yet activated, wherein the amount of NO2 that flows into the SCR catalyst is increased by reducing the amount of unburnt fuel supplied, when a low-load operation of the internal combustion engine is performed.
