A simplified MEMS optical display device driven by electrostatic forces and associated arrays are provided for. The optical display device includes an optically transparent substrate, an optically transparent fixed electrode disposed on the substrate and a pigmented translucent film disposed on the substrate. A moveable optical shutter is affixed to the substrate and is generally aligned with the fixed electrode and the pigmented translucent film. The moveable optical shutter comprises an electrode element and a biasing element. In addition, a fixed portion attached to the substrate and a distal portion adjacent to the fixed portion defines the optical shutter. When an electrostatic voltage differential is established between the fixed electrode and the optical shutter electrode element the distal portion of the optical shutter will move to controllably regulate the pigmentation of an optical signal.

A sample analysis device is provided, the device comprising a frame adapted to accept at least one analysis apparatus, with each analysis apparatus having an analysis distance associated therewith. A eucentric goniometer is operably engaged with the frame and is adapted to eucentrically support a sample at a eucentric point within a reference system defined by the eucentric goniometer. The reference system of the eucentric goniometer is independent of the analysis distance. An axial adjustment device is operably engaged with at least one of the frame and the eucentric goniometer and is configured to coincidentally position the eucentric point and the analysis distance for the respective analysis apparatus. An associated device and method are also provided.

A controlled-shaped solder reservoir provides additional solder to a bump in the flow step for increasing the volume of solder forming the solder bump. The controlled shaped reservoirs can be shaped and sized to provide predetermined amounts of solder to the solder bump. Thus, the height of the resulting solder bump can be predetermined. The solder reservoirs can be shaped to take a minimum amount of space, such as by at least partially wrapping around the solder bump. Consequently, the solder bumps may have increased height without adding to the space requirements of the solder bump, or without increasing the fabrication cost. In addition, due to the finite time required for solder flow, a means of sequencing events during soldering is provided.

The first and second axes preferably intersect at a 90.degree. angle. A first actuator provides mechanical force for rotating the second frame relative to the first frame about the first axis. A second actuator provides mechanical force for rotating the plate relative to the second frame about the second axis. Accordingly, the plate can be independently rotated relative to the first axis and the second axis. Related methods are also disclosed.

The solder structure includes an elongate portion on the metallurgy structure and an enlarged width portion on the enlarged width portion of the metallurgy structure. Accordingly, the enlarged width portion of the solder structure can be formed on a portion of the microelectronic substrate other than the contact pad and still be electronically connected to the pad.

A noise suppressor includes an input transducer and an output transducer adapted to be located in an ear canal. A housing is provided to support the transducers in the ear canal, and the housing provides an acoustically unobstructed passage from the entrance of the ear canal to the ear drum. The input transducer generates electrical signals in response to sound pressure waves entering the ear canal, and a portion of the electrical signal is processed to generate an inverse noise signal which is applied to the output transducer. Accordingly, the output transducer produces inverse noise pressure waves in order to reduce an undesired noise portion of the sound pressure waves reaching the ear drum. The sound pressure waves also reach the ear drum without significant alteration.

A method for pretreating a solder surface for fluxless soldering is disclosed. The method uses a noble fluorine gas to remove surface oxides from solder surfaces, without the use of external stimulation. A noble fluorine gas is suffused across the solder surface to reduce or eliminate or chemically convert the surface oxides. The process can take place at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. A simple belt driven transport may be used to move the parts past a nozzle which emits the vapor in a system similar to a conventional solder reflow machine.

A field effect transistor includes a pair of buried centroid regions in a semiconductor substrate at a predetermined depth from the substrate face and having a doping concentration opposite the source and drain regions. A gradient region surrounds each of the pair of buried centroid regions. The gradient regions have decreasing doping concentration in all directions away from the associated centroid region. Source and drain extension regions may also be provided. The buried centroid/gradient regions operate to screen charge on the source and drain regions facing the channel to prevent this charge from interacting with the channel. Short channel effects are thereby reduced or minimized. The threshold voltage of the device can also be adjusted without the need for threshold adjusting implants. The buried centroid/gradient regions and source and drain extension regions may be fabricated in a self-aligned process using the gate and gate sidewall spacers as a mask.

The transducer can be strengthened by arranging the conductive strips in cells surrounded by unidirectional cell stiffening members and unidirectional displacement limiting members. The unidirectional cell stiffening members may include notches. The unidirectional displacement limiting members may include unidirectional buckling straps or flexible arches. The cells of electrically conductive strips can be organized in modular or fractal arrays.
