An air-fuel mixture supply apparatus includes an intake passage opening to a combustion chamber in a cylinder, an intake valve provided between the intake passage and the combustion chamber, a fuel injection valve for injecting at least one of branched spray flows directing to the intake valve, a swirl generator generates vortex flow in the mixture in the combustion chamber by controlling to choke the intake passage. The swirl generator comprises a main passage forming the intake passage, at least one of sub-intake passages which is provided to form a by-pass passage of the main passage and formed such that the total sum of the cross-sectional areas is smaller than the cross-sectional area of the main passage, an intake control valve for controlling the choke of the main passage, a valve for controlling the choke at least one of the sub-intake passages, a controller for varying the number of the sub-intake passages to be used and the cross-sectional area of each of the sub-intake passages corresponding to the operating state of the internal combustion engine, and another controller for varying the direction of fuel injection and the number of fuel injections corresponding to the operating state of the internal combustion engine.

In order to prevent a catalyst for an internal combustion engine from experiencing decreased efficiency by deterioration after long time use of the catalyst, the decreased efficiency of the catalyst is determined, and the internal engine is controlled based on results of the determination so as to maintain high efficiency of the catalyst. The catalyst is installed in an exhaust pipe of the engine. Sensors for detecting conditions of exhaust gas both at a upstream side and a downstream side of the catalyst are provided, respectively. As for the sensor, for example, an oxygen sensor whose output varies stepwise at .lambda.=1, or a sensor whose output varies in proportion to air-fuel ratio can be used. Detected values of the sensors are taken into a control unit, catalyst efficiency and deteriorating degree of the catalyst are estimated by comparison of the detected values, and the engine is controlled so that the catalyst efficiency is maximized. A preferable exhaust gas cleaning characteristics of the catalyst can be maintained because the decreased efficiency of the catalyst is determined exactly and the engine is controlled so as to prevent the catalyst from experiencing decrease efficiency.

Under the partial load, an ignition source is provided in the vicinity of a fuel injection valve, and after the fuel is injected, the mixture is ignited, and a resulting flame is caused by a spray of the fuel to spread into a cylinder, thereby effecting a stratified combustion. When the load increases, so that soot and so on are produced in the stratified combustion, the fuel injection is effected a plurality of times in a divided manner, and a premixture is produced within the cylinder by the front-half injection, and a flame, produced by the latter-half injection, is injected into the cylinder to burn this premixture.
