Abstract: Methods to improve dewatering in industrial and municipal sludges are described. One method involves admixing sludge from a papermaking process and modified cellulose to provide modified sludge with the modified cellulose present in an effective amount to improve dewatering in the treated sludge, such as in allowing use of reduced amounts of coagulant and/or reducing dewatering times, increased dewatered volumes, and reduced sludge product moisture contents, and the like. The dewatered sludge may be formed into a dried particulate, and may be used as filler or other component of concrete, rubber, asphalt, plastics, resin-wood composite products, and other composite products.

Abstract: One embodiment provides a method for monitoring the quality of nanofibrillar cellulose produced in a process comprising disintegrating fibers of cellulose pulp, the method comprising measuring in real-time optically the turbidity of a dispersion containing nanofibrillar cellulose obtained from a disintegrating process, and determining the quality of said produced nanofibrillar cellulose using a correlation between the measured turbidity and said quality of the produced nanofibrillar cellulose, wherein lowered turbidity indicates increased quality of the nanofibrillar cellulose. One embodiment provides a device for monitoring the quality of nanofibrillar cellulose produced in a process comprising disintegrating fibers of cellulose pulp, arranged to carry out said method.

Abstract: In accordance with some embodiments of the present invention, a composite material is prepared by blending a flame retardant modified cellulosic nanomaterial (FR-CN) filler into a polymer, wherein the FR-CN filler comprises a cellulosic nanomaterial (e.g., cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and/or cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs)) having a surface functionalized to incorporate a phosphorus-containing moiety. In some embodiments, the FR-CN filler is prepared by reacting hydroxyl groups on the surface of the cellulosic nanomaterial and a halogenated phosphorous-containing monomer (e.g., diphenyl phosphoryl chloride). In some embodiments, the surface of the cellulosic nanomaterial is further functionalized to incorporate an orthogonal functionality selected to enhance the compatibility of the FR-CN filler with the polymer by reacting hydroxyl groups on the surface of the cellulosic nanomaterial and a monomer (e.g., epichlorohydrin when the polymer is an epoxy-based polymer).
