A joining device for electrofusion of at least one end of a pipe to a fitting is provided which includes a fitting of a polymeric material and a collar adapted to receive the end of the pipe. The collar is fabricated from a conductive polymer composite material and positioned within the fitting. A connector for connecting the collar to a source of current may be provided which may be integral to the fitting. Likewise, the collar may be integral to the fitting. All three of the connector, collar and fitting are preferably an integral unit. A method of making the joining device and a method of using the joining device are also provided.

A method for bonding or joining thermoplastic or thermoset polymeric materials is provided which comprises applying a layer of conductive material (16) at a joint or between surfaces of thermoplastic or thermoset polymeric materials (12, 14), introducing a current so as to raise the temperature of the polymeric material above its melting point, maintaining the current for a time sufficient to allow the polymeric material to become molten and thereby form the joint or bond, and then removing the current and allowing the joint or bond (15) to cool. The method is advantageous in that it provides a simple and inexpensive means of bonding thermoplastic or thermoset polymeric materials with a minimum of materials and equipment The method of the present invention can also be utilized so as to heat thermoplastic pipes and other devices made of thermoplastic materials.

A method for bonding thermoplastic substrates is provided. A thin, porous, resistive heater is provided between layers of thermoplastic substrates to be bonded in the absence of an adhesive. The fabric heater is in intimate contact with the substrates at the joint by application of pressure. When the heater is energized, the thermoplastic material at the joint is melted or softened, and becomes uniformly distributed in the weld. After cooling, the fabric heater remains within the weld area and provides increased reinforcement to the weld bond.

The preferred heating shelf includes thermochromic materials, or an LED indicator, which provide a visual indica of shelf temperature. The preferred heating shelf provides intimate contact with the heated food products, thus optimizing heat transfer between the heating shelf and the food products. Optionally provided, varied surface watt density in the heating shelf allows for accurate heat placement such that the food products can be evenly warmed while avoiding over warming. In another embodiment, the heating shelf includes two resistance heating elements. The first heating element is a temperature booster used for defrosting and heating, while the second heating element is a maintenance heater to maintain heated food at a serving temperature.
