The procedure of the invention sets a revolution speed at an efficient drive point, which is selected among drive points of an engine fulfilling a target power Pe* to be output from the engine, to a tentative revolution speed Netmp1 of the engine. The procedure also calculates a revolution speed that satisfies both a torque demand Tr* to be output to a drive shaft and a charge limit Win of a battery or an electric accumulator and sets the calculated revolution speed to a tentative revolution speed Netmp2 of the engine. The procedure sets the grater between the tentative revolution speed Netmp1 and the tentative revolution speed Netmp2 to a target revolution speed Ne* of the engine and controls the engine and two motors. This arrangement ensures output of a required braking force in response to a driver's accelerator-off action, while taking into account the charge limit of the electric accumulator.

In a controller for an electric vehicle, a voltage current phase difference calculating circuit calculates a vector phase .theta..sub.c from a voltage command value and the primary current of an alternating current motor. The vector phase .theta..sub.c is input to a second voltage command circuit which calculates a second d-axis voltage command value and a second q-axis voltage command value using the vector phase .theta..sub.c and d-axis and q-axis current differences. By correcting the voltage command value using the second d-axis and second q-axis voltage command values, the stability of the current control system is improved. By controlling the electric vehicle using such a system, a stable current control can be attained even when the electric vehicle is driven under a regenerative running state or a weak magnetic field control state.

An electronic control system (20) controls the energy distributor (8) as a function of a driving signal according to boundary conditions, for example, according to the least possible specific fuel consumption. A temporary increase in the power required to drive the motors can be supplied by the battery (22). In the event that the increase in power lasts for longer periods, the internal combustion engine, which as far as possible operates in a state that ensures low fuel consumption, is accelerated in order to cover the demand for high power. At the maximum output of the internal combustion engine, the energy stored in the battery (22) supplies the power for the additional thrust.
