Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for implementing a cooling system for a vehicle heat-generating component wherein a two-phase coolant flows between a heat sink module and a heat radiator module. The heat radiator module can be mounted at a higher elevation within the vehicle than the heat sink module. High and low temperature fluid paths can fluidly couple the heat sink module and the heat radiator module. The heat sink module can be coupled to a heat-generating component.As the coolant is heated at the heat sink module by heat from the heat-generating component, it can change to a substantially gaseous phase and move, primarily by force of buoyancy, to the heat radiator module via the high temperature fluid path. As the coolant is cooled by the heat radiator module, it can change to a substantially liquid phase and move, primarily by force of gravity, to the heat sink module.

Abstract: A battery includes at least one integrated first heat exchanger element that forms an integral part of the battery and is formed in one piece with the battery. The heat exchanger element can end flush with the surface of the battery, but it can also protrude from or be recessed into the surface of the battery. A coolable battery system includes at least one such battery and a second heat exchanger element for each battery that can be reversibly brought into thermal operative contact with the first heat exchanger element. A method for cooling such a battery in the coolable battery system, in which the first heat exchanger element of the at least one battery is brought in thermal operative connection with the second heat exchanger element, includes maintaining the second heat exchanger element at a lower temperature level than the first heat exchanger element.

Abstract: A vehicle includes a traction battery arranged to be cooled by a chiller of a refrigerant system, and a radiator of a coolant system. The coolant system includes a proportioning valve having a pair of first and second outlets that each selectively receives a proportion of coolant flowing into the valve depending upon a position of the valve. The coolant system further includes a chiller loop connected to the first outlet and arranged to convey coolant to the chiller, and a radiator loop connected to the second outlet and arranged to convey coolant to the radiator. A controller is configured to, in response to the refrigerant system being ON, actuate the proportioning valve to proportion the coolant between the first and second outlets such that heat transfer through the chiller is limited to a chiller capacity.

Abstract: Vehicle operating systems for operating a vehicle having a driving seat for a vehicle driver and at least one passenger seat for passengers are described. The vehicle operating system may include one or more camera devices for shooting images of hand actions of the driver or images of hand actions of a passenger, and a storage device for storing operating signals corresponding to hand actions. A processing device may be configured to select the driver or the passengers as a gesture command operator, and to control the camera device to shoot hand action images of the selected gesture command operator. The command system may also be configured to convert the shot hand action images into corresponding operating signals according to hand action indicia stored in the storage device. The operating signals may be sent to execution devices, that execute the corresponding operations.

Abstract: An energy storage thermal management system includes an energy storage compartment including a liquid coolant bath portion and a vapor portion. A plurality of energy storage cells are positioned within the energy storage compartment and submerged within the liquid coolant bath. A compressor is in communication with the vapor portion to remove vapor. A condenser is in communication with the compressor and returns liquid coolant to the energy storage compartment.

Abstract: A power system using multiple battery packs to generate a defined power output may include a plurality of modular battery packs, each of which may include: a first housing, a plurality of battery cells, a first interface that communicates information, and a second interface that transmits power. The power system may also include a second housing configured to removably receive the plurality of modular battery packs and a waveform generation circuit, and a processing system that is configured to receive the information from the battery packs indicating electrical waveform characteristics for power received from each, to cause the waveform generation circuit to aggregate the power received from the modular battery packs, and to cause the waveform generation circuit to generate an output electrical signal based on stored parameters.

Abstract: Electric vehicle thermal management systems and electric vehicles using the thermal management system, are disclosed. A passenger cabin is heated by the heat dissipated from a battery and/or a motor. A cooling circuit in the management system fluidly connects the battery, the motor and a first radiator in series. The first radiator provides a heat source to the passenger cabin by means of the heat dissipated from the battery and/or the electric motor. Under certain conditions, the electric motor is selectively separated from the cooling circuit, so that when the passenger cabin needs to be heated, the thermal management system can provide heat to the passenger cabin without affecting the heat dissipation of the battery.

Abstract: A battery assembly may include an array of battery cells, a conduit system, and an emitter. The conduit system delivers coolant for thermally communicating with the array and defines a channel with a flexible wall having dielectric particles. The emitter is located proximate the wall and programmed to selectively output a voltage or electric field to impart a dielectrically driven compression force on the particles to adjust a cross-sectional area of the channel to control a flow of the coolant therethrough. The channel may be a flexible resin-based tube including piezoelectric materials. The emitter may output a voltage to move the piezoelectric materials. The channel may be a flexible resin-based tube including materials having electrostriction properties. The emitter may output an electric field to move the materials having electrostriction properties.
