An apparatus for fabricating a coverlayer of optical information storage media is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a rotating platform, a rotating plate and a UV irradiation system. A substrate is disposed on the rotating platform and a radiation setting resin material is disposed on a surface of the substrate. The rotating plate is moved towards the rotating platform to compress the radiation-setting resin material against the substrate. The resulting structure is rotated by rotating the rotating platform. A thin radiation-setting resin layer with a uniform thickness is formed on the substrate. The radiation-setting resin layer is illuminated by a UV light to harden the radiation-setting resin layer. Next, the rotating plate is separated from the radiation-setting resin layer while the radiation-setting resin layer remains adhered to the substrate. The hardened radiation-setting resin layer serves as a coverlayer of the optical information storage media.

A method for compression molding a cylindrical tablet is presented, the method being capable of preventing the occurrence of cracks and the breakage of core punches. The method for compression molding a cylindrical tablet is achieved by using a rotary powder compression molding machine provided with a die and upper and lower punches fitted to a rotary table and a core punch penetrating the punch end of a lower punch. The compression molding method being characterized by using the core punch in which the difference between the smallest diameter of the core punch at the protion for forming the center opening of the cylindrical tablet and the reference diameter of the portion in design is within 0.04 mm.

A machine for compression molding plastic closures includes a support mounted for rotation around an axis, and a plurality of compression molds on the support at angularly spaced positions around the axis. Each of the molds includes a male mold section and a female mold section, at least one of which is movable with respect to the other between a closed position to form a compression mold cavity and an open position spaced from each other. The male mold section includes a mold core and a stripper sleeve surrounding the mold core for movement both rotationally and axially of the mold core. A first screw drive couples the female mold section to the stripper sleeve for rotating the stripper sleeve around the mold core as the at least one mold section is moved between the closed and open positions. A second screw drive couples the stripper sleeve to the support to move the stripper sleeve axially over the mold core as the stripper sleeve is rotated around the core. The stripper sleeve thus rotationally and axially removes a closure shell molded around the core as the at least one mold section is moved with respect to the other from the closed toward the open position.

The sealed protection means (11) comprise, for each punch (5, 7), a concertinaed sleeve (12) covering the cylindrical shank (8) and having an annular portion (13) constituting its far end relative to the working head (10), forming an annular seal and providing also a removable element used to attach support means (14) that protrude from the respective disc (4, 6). The near end (15) of each concertinaed sleeve (12) relative to the working head (10) presents an enlarged annular portion (16) that engages with a matching annular groove (17) in the cylindrical shank (8) to provide a tight seal.

A method and apparatus for compression molding plastic articles including closures which includes providing coacting sets of tools including a first set for moving a core and core sleeve into engagement with a cavity mold on a second set of tooling. An actuator is provided between the first set of tooling and a fixed upper cam. The second set of tooling includes an associated actuator supporting the cavity mold and associated with a lower fixed cam. A nitrogen cylinder in the second set of tooling provides for control of the compression molding force. In a preferred form, a plurality of sets of tooling are provided in circumferentially spaced relation on a rotating turret supported by a central column. A common manifold supplies the pressure at accurately controlled pressure to each of the nitrogen cylinders. A control system is provided for monitoring and changing the pressure.

The tool pairs are mounted for motion in an endless path. The tool pairs and associated mold sections are closed during motion in the path for compression a molding charge in the mold cavity formed between the mold sections of each pair, and opening the mold cavity to release an article formed between the mold sections. A latch mechanism is associated with each pair of tools for holding the tools and mold sections in the closed position during motion in the path independent of the mechanism for closing the tools and mold halves. In this way, forces imparted to the mold halves and tools to hold the mold closed are isolated from the machine frame. The latch mechanism is selectively unlatched to permit opening of the mold halves and release of the article compression-molded between the mold halves.

Starch-based compositions are molded between heated molds in order to form a cellular matrix and also to remove the water from the starch-based compositions in order to form a binding matrix of solidified starch. The molding apparatus is configured to form one or more creases within the hinge area in order to define one or more lines upon which the hinge will bend. The molding apparatus is also configured such that the region of the mold corresponding to the inner surface of the hinge area will transfer heat more slowly to the inner hinge surface, resulting in reduced thickness of the skin of the inner hinge. This increases the collapsibility, or ability of the inner surface of the hinge to fold or buckle, during the bending action. This in turn reduces the bending radius of hinge such that the hinging action exerts less strain on the outer surface of the hinge. The inner surface of the hinge may optionally be treated with glycerin or other polyols soften the inner surface. The outer surface of the hinge may optionally be coated with an elastomeric material, such as polyvinyl alcohol, in order to strengthen the outer surface and reduce its tendency to fracture during the hinging action.
