The present invention relates to a heat-resistant expansive member suitably used as a holding member for holding a ceramic monolithic catalyst in a motor vehicle or the like. The heat-resistant expansive member of the present invention is made at the blending ratio of 1 to 5 wt % of sepiolite, 30 to 60 wt % of treated vermiculite, 20 to 40 wt % of ceramic fibers and 5 to 20 wt % of an organic binder, or at the blending ratio of 21 to 30 wt % of sepiolite, 30 to 40 wt % of treated vermiculite, 20 to 40 wt % of ceramic fibers and 5 to 20 wt % of an organic binder. Regardless of the low- or high-temperature zone, the heat-resistant expansive member of the present invention presents a great holding force to the monolithic catalyst or the like. The heat-resistant expansive member is improved in cushioning properties and gas-attack resisting properties particularly in the high-temperature zone.

Compositions, methods, and apparatus for manufacturing sheets having a highly inorganically filled matrix. Suitable inorganically filled mixtures are prepared by mixing together an organic polymer binder, water, one or more aggregate materials, fibers, and optional admixtures in the correct proportions in order to form a sheet which has the desired performance criteria. The inorganically filled mixtures are formed into sheets by first extruding the mixtures and then passing the extruded materials between a set of rollers. The rolled sheets are dried in an accelerated manner to form a substantially hardened sheet, such as by heated rollers and/or a drying chamber. The inorganically filled sheets may have properties substantially similar to sheets presently made from traditional materials like paper, paperboard, polystyrene, plastic, or metal. Such sheets can be controlled, pressed, scored, perforated, folded, and glued to fashion articles for the sheets. They have especial utility in the mass production of containers, particularly food and beverage containers.

A process for preparing a structured composite pigmentary material comprises forming a dispersion of uncoated particles of titanium dioxide at a pH value at which the particles have a surface charge and subjecting the dispersion to cross-flow filtration until the dispersion contains more than 50% by weight titanium dioxide. The concentrated dispersion is mixed with a dispersion of chemically distinct particles having a surface charge of opposite sign under conditions which ensure that the sign of the surface charge on either of the particulate materials is not reversed. In the resultant composite pigmentary material the titanium dioxide particles are held in association with the chemically distinct particles as a result of said surface charges. The structured composite can be used to produce paints having higher opacity than conventional paints containing an equivalent amount of titanium dioxide and the durability of these paints is better than a conventional paint containing a similar amount of uncoated titanium dioxide.

A composite particulate pigmentary material is disclosed which comprises an association of at least two chemically distinct materials in which the particles of one material carry a positive surface charge and the particles of the second material carry a negative surface charge and particles are held in association as a result of these surface charges. Also disclosed is a method for preparing composite particulate pigmentary material comprising forming aqueous dispersions of two particulate materials under conditions in which the surface charges of the particles of the two materials are of different signs and mixing the dispersions. Typical materials useful for preparing the composite include inorganic pigments, fillers and extenders and organic polymeric microspheres. The product is useful as a pigment in, for example, paints, inks, paper and plastics.
