Abstract: Devices and methods to measure gastric residual volume (GRV) are described where at least one additive component (a GRV indicator) may be dispersed in a body lumen such as a stomach. The GRV indicator may changes a physical (chemical, electrical, thermal, mechanical, optical, etc.) characteristic within the stomach by a measureable degree. This degree of change and/or the rate of return to the previous state, may be used to determine the GRV of a patient. The determined GRV can also be used to automatically or semi-automatically control the patient's feeding rate and/or volume and/or frequency to adequately nourish the patient but avoid complications. The physical characteristic(s) may also be used to detect that the feeding catheter or tube is in the correct location (ie stomach vs lung or esophagus.

Abstract: A system and method for compensation of angular distortions in a system utilizing light emitters and light sensors disposed on non-parallel jaws may include determining a first point at a first side of a region of interest and a second point at a second side of the region of interest, determining a linear curve including the first and second points, and utilizing the linear curve to remove the angular distortion from the region of interest between the first and second points. A system and method for compensation of angular distortions may alternatively include modeling a non-pulsatile illumination pattern according to the intensities of individual emitters, comparing the pattern according to the model against a non-pulsatile illumination pattern detected using the light sensors, and varying the intensities of the individual emitters based on the comparison until angular distortion has been removed.

Abstract: A surgical access assembly and method of use is disclosed. The surgical access assembly comprises an outer sheath and an obturator. The outer sheath and obturator are configured to be delivered to an area of interest within the brain. Either the outer sheath or the obturator may be configured to operate with a navigational system to track the location of either within the brain. Once positioned at a desired location, the obturator is removed, leaving a distal end of the outer sheath adjacent an area of interest, and creating a working corridor. Interrogation of the area of interest may be performed to evaluate a disorder and/or abnormality, as well as evaluate treatment regimes. Interventional devices may also be introduced to the area of interest, as well as a variety of treatments.

Abstract: The present invention comprises a system and a computer-implemented method designed for measuring the visible colon surface area that has been seen from a colonoscope, and for displaying the results of the measurement. The method estimates the orientation of the camera of the colonoscope, estimates the travel distance of the scope camera from the axial vector lengths coming from or headed towards the focus of expansion point, and visualizing the percentage of the visible surface of the entire colon.

Abstract: An intelligent implant includes a component of an implantable prosthesis and an implantable reporting processor (IRP) associated with the implantable prosthesis. The IRP includes a housing having a casing and a cover coupled to the casing, an electronics assembly within the housing, and an antenna within the housing and coupled to the electronics assembly. The antenna is tuned to, and the electronics assembly is configured to enable communication through the antenna at both 2.45 GHZ and 403 MHZ (MICS channel). The antenna comprises a flat ribbon configured in a loop and having major surfaces. The antenna is encapsulated within the cover of the housing and is oriented therein with major surfaces of the antenna generally parallel with an inner surface of the cover.

Abstract: A stimulation electrode assembly configured to be positioned relative to a patient for an operative procedure is disclosed. An evoked stimulation response may be sensed by a sensor near a portion of a subject. The evoked response may be sensed by an electrode and determined with a monitoring system. The evoked response may additionally and/or alternatively be sensed with a motion sensor. A position sensor may be provided to measure or determine whether the sensor has moved during a procedure.
