Abstract: A lead assembly for networked implants may contain a controller, an implantable tissue contact system connected to the controller and including a plurality of leads, and a breakout connector connected to each of the plurality of leads, and further connected to a shared communication path. A physiological interface system may contain a controller and an implantable tissue contact system. Methods of treating a subject and monitoring a subject include transmitting signals between a controller and an implantable tissue contact system.

Abstract: The present invention is a Miniature Vein Enhancer that includes a Miniature Projection Head. The Miniature Projection Head may be operated in one of three modes, AFM, DBM, and RTM. The Miniature Projection Head of the present invention projects an image of the veins of a patient, which aids the practitioner in pinpointing a vein for an intravenous drip, blood test, and the like. The Miniature projection head may have a cavity for a power source or it may have a power source located in a body portion of the Miniature Vein Enhancer. The Miniature Vein Enhancer may be attached to one of several improved needle protectors, or the Miniature Vein Enhancer may be attached to a body similar to a flashlight for hand held use. The Miniature Vein Enhancer of the present invention may also be attached to a magnifying glass, a flat panel display, and the like.

Abstract: An implantable neuromodulation system is provided comprising at least one stimulation microelectrode, at least one microelectrode, and a frequency-shaping amplifier (FSA). The at least one stimulation microelectrode is configured to deliver a desired electrical stimulation to a neuronal population. The at least one recording microelectrode is configured to receive neural signals from the neuronal population. The FSA is coupled to the at least one recording microelectrode. The FSA is configured to allow for simultaneous electrical recording and electrical stimulation of the neuronal population.

Abstract: A neural probe structure has a probe having a microfluidic channel. The probe is inserted into an inside of a subject. A body to which the probe is fixed has a fluid entrance communicating with the microfluidic channel. A cover element is fixed to the body to cover the fluid entrance. The cover element has a connecting opening to which an external conduit is connected, and a fluid delivery channel extending such that the connecting opening and the fluid entrance are in fluid communication. A fluid fed from the external conduit flows along the fluid delivery channel, goes into the fluid entrance, and is delivered to the subject through the microfluidic channel.

Abstract: A device includes a handle, an expandable structure including a plurality of splines extending from a proximal hub to a distal hub, a first electrode on a first spline of the plurality of splines, an outer tube extending from the handle to the proximal hub, and a shaft extending through the outer tube from the handle to the distal hub. The expandable structure has a collapsed state and a self-expanded state. The handle is configured to retract the shaft. Retracting the shaft may expand the expandable structure outward of the self-expanded state.

Abstract: The invention relates to sensors configured to include compositions disposed in specific regions of the sensor in order to provide the sensors with enhanced functional properties, for example faster start-up times. These compositions include, for example, hygroscopic compositions, gas generating compositions and gas solvating compositions. While typical embodiments of the invention pertain to glucose sensors, the systems, methods and materials disclosed herein can be adapted for use with a wide variety of sensors known in the art.

Abstract: A surgical instrument, such as an endoscopic or laparoscopic instrument. The surgical instrument may comprise an end effector comprising at least one sensor. The surgical instrument may also comprise an electrically conductive shaft having a distal end connected to the end effector wherein the sensor is electrically insulated from the shaft. The surgical instrument may also comprise a handle connected to a proximate end of the shaft. The handle may comprise a control unit electrically coupled to the shaft such that the shaft radiates signals as an antenna from the control unit to the sensor and receives radiated signals from the sensor. Other components electrically coupled to the shaft may also radiate the signals.

Abstract: According to one aspect, a system for sensing ethanol from human skin, that comprises at least one apparatus for sensing ethanol and a coupling matrix readout extraction unit for performing a method of extracting a coupling-matrix readout. The at least one sensing apparatus and the coupling matrix readout extraction may be mounted on a substrate. The substrate may be adapted such that it can be formed into a wearable accessory that can be worn by a human subject. When the wearable accessory is worn by the human subject such that the subject provides a skin tissue sample to the accessory, the presence or concentration of ethanol and other compounds may be determined from the vapor associated with the tissue sample.
